When Do Goldfish Fry Get Their Color?
A tank full of baby goldfish usually looks like a tank full of tiny brown minnows. It’s easy to wonder whether you raised the wrong fish.
You didn’t. Young goldfish stay dark for months, and the orange comes through slowly.
| Age | What you’ll usually see |
|---|---|
| Hatching to 4 weeks | Tiny slivers, see-through at first, then darker |
| 1 to 3 months | Brown or bronze, with body and tail shape showing |
| 3 to 6 months | Color starts to change on the belly and sides |
| Up to a year | Brighter color becomes clear |
The color timeline comes from fish vet Dr Richmond Loh, who says the change normally starts “from 3-6 months of age or even later,” and from Maidenhead Aquatics, which says brighter color can take up to a year.
The early rows come from a study of young goldfish, which found their see-through look fades in the days after hatching, and from the Bristol breeding notes, where a fantail breeder sorts by body and tail shape at 8 and 12 weeks.

Why baby goldfish start out dark
Maidenhead Aquatics says the dark color helps protect young fish until they grow big enough to look after themselves.
The orange shows through once that dark pigment is lost. A 1939 study in the Biological Bulletin describes the common goldfish as brown or black when young, turning orange or red as part or nearly all of its dark pigment cells are destroyed.
Why some change faster than others
Dr Loh explains that goldfish color is under genetic and hormonal control, and that the change is normal. So don’t worry if fry from the same spawn change at different times.
Where the fish live matters too. Dr Loh says pale fish kept in outdoor ponds can look brighter, thanks to sunlight and the natural foods they find.
Will every fry turn orange?
Not always. Maidenhead Aquatics says some fish stay the bronze color of their wild ancestors, and Dr Loh notes that a bronze goldfish can end up gold, or even white.
Calico breeds work differently, with patchy color that varies from fish to fish. Some of their fry show the plain wild-type color instead. Bristol Shubunkin breeders call these “bronzes” and remove them when the fry are four weeks old.
When breeders judge color
There’s no rush to judge color. One fantail breeder in the Bristol Aquarists’ Society notes makes a final cull for color at 16 to 20 weeks, keeping about 20 of the 3,000 fry raised each year. A common goldfish breeder in the same notes keeps fish for two years, since that’s how long their body color takes to show its quality.
If you’re breeding for looks, sort by body and tail shape first. For solid orange types, follow the fantail breeder’s lead and wait until about 16 weeks to choose for color. Calico fish color up sooner, so Bristol Shubunkin breeders already sort for color at 8 and 12 weeks.
Dark patches that aren’t normal
Not every dark mark is part of growing up. Dr Loh lists dark or black patches in unusual places, along with heavy slime, blisters, or ulcers, as signs of disease that need prompt care from a vet.
The clutch tracker follows your fry from egg to young fish and shows what each stage needs, including when to expect color. If you’re still losing fry along the way, see what kills young fry and how to stop it.
