How Long Do Goldfish Eggs Take to Hatch?
The chase is over, the eggs are stuck to the plants, and now the waiting starts. It’s shorter than most people expect, and the thermometer on your tank tells you most of the story.
In most home tanks, goldfish eggs hatch 2 to 5 days after they’re laid. Warm water speeds that up, and cool water slows it down.
Hatch times from 64°F to 93°F
In a 2023 study of goldfish eggs, researchers kept eggs at five temperatures and timed when the first and last ones hatched.
| Water temperature | First eggs hatch | Last eggs hatch | Eggs that hatched |
|---|---|---|---|
| 64°F (18°C) | 4.4 days | 6.5 days | 81% |
| 72°F (22°C) | 3.1 days | 4.3 days | 97% |
| 79°F (26°C) | 2.1 days | 2.7 days | 93% |
| 86°F (30°C) | 1.5 days | 2.2 days | 82% |
| 93°F (34°C) | 1.7 days | 2.7 days | 10% |
Hotter isn’t better. At 93°F the eggs hatched no sooner than at 86°F, and every fry that came out was deformed. The team estimated that eggs hatch best at about 75°F (24°C).
Signs the eggs are on track
Fertile eggs look clear. In water around 70°F (21°C), the Bristol Aquarists’ Society says you’ll see two tiny black eyes and a curved dark line inside each one after about two days, as the young fish takes shape. See what that looks like next to eggs that won’t hatch.
Infertile eggs usually turn white, and they’re especially prone to fungus. Fungus can attack good eggs too, so lift white ones out with a pipette when you can do it without bumping the clear ones.
Why some eggs never hatch
- No male was there. Goldfish eggs are fertilized outside the body when a male releases milt around them. Eggs laid without a male can’t develop.
- The water was too hot. The hatch rate in the table crashes at 93°F, while the study found no real difference anywhere from 64°F to 86°F.
- Something ate them. Fancy goldfish are notorious for eating their own eggs. If the eggs are still in with the adults, start with what to do when goldfish lay eggs.
Eggs in a pond
In the UK, goldfish usually spawn in spring as the water nears 68°F (20°C), says Paul Green of the Goldfish Society of Great Britain in Practical Fishkeeping. That sits between the 64°F and 72°F rows in the table, so expect roughly 3½ to 5½ days.
If you want to raise pond eggs, lift the egg-covered plants into a tub of pond water. That keeps them away from the adults while they develop.
Keep the temperature steady
Turning up the heater can feel like a shortcut. Paul Green’s advice is that any temperature change, up or down, should be gradual.
If your tank already sits in the low to mid 70s, the sweet spot in the table, leave it there.
What happens after they hatch
New fry hang on the glass for about two days while they use up their yolk sacs. Use that time to get their first food ready, and read when to start feeding your fry so you know the sign to watch for.
To keep every date in one place, follow the clutch in the goldfish fry growth chart. It shows which stage your fry are in and what they need each day.
